In the former article, I presented to you the information about ìtraveler informationî and ìnavigation deviceî. We agree that ìdriving directionsî service can stand alone or can be combined with ìlocation-based serviceî. You should determine if you need them both.

All these sets of information need to be displayed and that is the function of navigation device. The present in-car navigation (the first generation in-car navigation) is a device that generates and displays information in the same device. But this is its main drawback, since it could not receive real-time traffic data or perform complex analyses of different sets of information, or inclusion of large software programs that require constant monitoring i.e. traffic simulation, and forecasting program that include real-time traffic data from the filed, historical traffic and roadway network data, and other necessary information to predict real-time traffic conditions and to determine traffic responsive driving directions.

An alternative to this method is to make all the analysis in the servers situated in safe and secured locations and deliver the information to navigation devices in the car. This is widely known as the second generation navigation system.

There are two characteristics of the ìsecond generation car navigation systemî that you should always recognize: the driving directions must be processed on servers somewhere else and the in-car system requires wireless connection or wireless Internet connection. This may include the location based service as well. However, the GPS receiver must be installed in-car.

(You might have heard of a number of removable car navigation systems. Please note that most of the systems presently available in the US market are the ìfirst generationî removable car navigation.)

Now, youíll see that the second generation car navigation is most interesting:

You can adopt most mobile wireless devices to perform the function of ìnavigationî
You can always subscribe to use the service rather cheap, because there is no one company aggregate these services together and try to take advantage of every small bit and piece.
There is no big advertisement to persuade you to the wrong direction. It is up to you to review and decide which systems/information to use.
